The Real Workflow, Not the LinkedIn Fantasy
Every tech influencer on LinkedIn will tell you that AI is replacing developers. They're wrong. What AI is actually doing is making good developers dramatically faster and bad developers marginally less terrible. Here's how we actually use AI to build SaaS products in 2026, from initial spec to production deployment. The process starts with specification, and this is where most AI-assisted development goes off the rails. If you prompt an AI with "build me a SaaS app," you'll get a generic CRUD template that impresses nobody and solves nothing. The spec phase is still deeply human. We sit down with the client, map out user flows, define the data model, identify edge cases, and write detailed requirements. AI doesn't replace this thinking — it can't. It doesn't know your users. Once the spec is solid, AI becomes a force multiplier in the architecture phase. We use Claude to evaluate tradeoffs between different database schemas, discuss caching strategies, and pressure-test our API design. It's like having a senior engineer available for rubber-duck debugging 24/7. The key insight is that AI is best at pattern matching against known solutions. It's excellent at telling you "this looks like a multi-tenant system, here are the three common approaches and their tradeoffs." It's terrible at inventing genuinely novel architectures. Implementation is where the speed gains are real and measurable. Writing boilerplate — API routes, database queries, form validation schemas, TypeScript interfaces — used to take hours. Now it takes minutes. We define a Zod schema as the single source of truth, and AI generates the corresponding database migration, API handler, and form component. The schema stays human-authored because that's where the business logic lives. Our stack for SaaS in 2026 is React with TypeScript on the frontend, Supabase for the backend (Postgres, auth, row-level security, edge functions), and Stripe for billing. This stack isn't trendy — it's proven. Supabase gives us a full Postgres database with real-time subscriptions and auth out of the box. Row-level security policies mean we can enforce multi-tenancy at the database level, not in application code where it's fragile and forgettable. Testing is the phase where AI hype meets reality. AI can generate unit tests for pure functions reliably. It can scaffold integration tests if you give it enough context about your system. But it cannot write meaningful end-to-end tests without understanding the user journey, and it consistently misses edge cases that a human tester would catch through intuition. We use AI for test coverage of the boring stuff — validation logic, utility functions, data transformations — and write critical path tests by hand. Deployment and infrastructure is largely automated now, but not by AI. We deploy to Netlify with preview branches for every PR. Database migrations run through Supabase's migration system. CI/CD pipelines handle linting, type checking, and test suites. This infrastructure was set up once, by humans, and it runs reliably without AI intervention. Not everything needs to be AI-powered. The honest assessment after building multiple SaaS products this way: AI cuts development time by roughly 30-40%, concentrated in the implementation phase. It doesn't meaningfully speed up requirements gathering, UX design, or deployment architecture. It makes mediocre code easier to produce, which is a double-edged sword. The developers who benefit most from AI are the ones who already know what good code looks like and can steer the output accordingly. If you're a business considering building a SaaS product in 2026, don't hire a team that says "we'll use AI to build it in a week." Hire a team that uses AI as one tool among many, knows when to lean on it and when to override it, and has shipped production software before AI was part of the conversation. The tool changed.
