The "Sarah in Melbourne just purchased" toast is the most copied growth widget of the decade, and somewhere along the way half the implementations stopped bothering with the part where Sarah exists. Fabricated activity notifications aren't a grey area — in Australia they're misleading conduct under consumer law, regulators have fined for exactly this, and the trust cost when a visitor smells it is total.
Velocity X's social-proof-toast is the rendering layer only — it deliberately takes an events array and no fake-data generator, because the component's job is the toast, and the honesty is yours to supply.
The Money Pattern
Feed it real, recent, aggregated events — aggregation converts as well as names and sidesteps both the privacy problem and the creepiness:
// Server: real events, aggregated, cached
// GET /api/social-proof → recent activity, no PII
[
{ text: '14 installs in the last 24 hours', at: '2026-10-18T09:00Z' },
{ text: 'A studio in Brisbane subscribed this week', at: '…' },
]
<SocialProofToast
events={events}
minInterval={45_000} // hard floor between toasts
maxPerSession={3} // then it stays quiet
position="bottom-left"
/>
"14 installs in the last 24 hours" needs no fabricated first name, leaks nothing about a real customer, and — the part growth teams underrate — is verifiable, which is what makes proof proof.
The Catch
Frequency is the difference between ambience and harassment. A hard interval floor, a session cap, and a dismissal that's remembered (same localStorage pattern as the exit-intent bar) — someone who closed one social-proof toast has answered for the whole session. And it never overlaps the system toast stack: one aria-live="polite" region per app, with proof toasts at lower priority than "your save failed".
If your volume is genuinely low, show nothing. "1 install this week" is anti-proof, and padding it is the exact fakery this post is against. The component accepts an empty array gracefully for that reason — silence is a valid state.
The Verdict
Social proof works when it's social and it's proof — real events, aggregated, rate-limited, dismissible, silent when thin. The toast is in Velocity X's Growth & Conversion category; the integrity of what you pipe into it is the actual feature.
